About our Phytophthora rapid test

The Pocket Diagnostic® Phytophthora rapid test is a genus-specific test designed for the in-field detection of many Phytophthora species including Phytophthora ramorum (Sudden oak death), Phytophthora infestans (Blight, Late blight), Phytophthora kernoviae, Phytophthora lateralis, Phytophthora cinnamomi, Phytophthora cactorum and others.

When using our test you can detect Phytophthora in a wide range of plant material, including woody tissues, leaves and roots.

Our Phytophthora rapid test utilises lateral flow technology to easily and reliably detect Phytophthora spp in a matter of minutes: the speed of results, therefore, allows for faster decision making in the event of a positive test result. This is why government inspectors, advisers, growers and plant disease experts all over the world use this test during their routine plant disease management.

The benefits of using the Pocket Diagnostic® Phytophthora test include:

  • – Rapid results, less than 10 minutes
  • – Portable, in-field use
  • – Simple user process
  • – No training required
  • – Faster decision making

How to use Pocket Diagnostic® Rapid Tests

Using the tests is simple. All you have to do is:

  • – break up some plant material
  • – add the sample to the buffer bottle
  • – shake the buffer bottle (includes ball bearings)
  • – allow the plant material to settle in the bottle
  • – use the pipette provided to add liquid to the test

If you would like more information on how to operate these handy tests, there is a great video on our  ‘How to use’ page of one of our tests being used.

Read the user instructions provided before using the tests.

 About Phytophthora spp.

Phytophthora spp. is a serious fungus-like (Oomycete) pathogen of which there are many species, affecting numerous plant hosts. Diseases caused by this pathogen include ramorum blight, potato late blight, tomato late blight, dieback and sudden oak death.

The Pocket Diagnostic® Phytophthora rapid test kit has been independently validated using the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection (EPPO) standards.

Phytophthora features on the UK Plant Health Risk Register and the European and Mediterranean Plant Protection Organisation (EPPO) A2 List of pests recommended for regulation as quarantine pests.

Finally, it is important to note that if an outbreak of Phytophthora is discovered in the UK and Europe it is the responsibility of the person who discovers the outbreak to inform the relevant local or national plant pathogen authorities. No legal action will be taken upon discovery of Phytophthora. The authorities only require notification in order to advise and help with removing the disease.
