Molecular Characterisation of Phytophthora 

PDplus™ is a brand new service for the identification of Phytophthora to species level using a combination of a Pocket Diagnostic™ lateral flow device (LFD) and DNA analysis.  If a Pocket Diagnostic test shows a positive result for Phytophthora, PDplus™ can be used to identify which species of the pathogen is present. This a process that can be transfered to the medical and veterinary sectors.

PDplus will initially confirm four pathogenic species of Phytophthora in a wide range of host plants:

Phytophthora ramorum
Phytophthora kernoviae
Phytophthora fragariae
Phytophthora cactorum

P. ramorum and kernoviae are notifiable pathogens in the EU, and positive results must be reported to the local statutory plant health authorities.

Convenient and easy to use
PDplus offers rapid, cost-effective identification of several Phytophthora species.  All that is required for analysis by us is a positive result on a Phytophthora Pocket Diagnostic lateral flow device.  There is no need to send a sample of the plant to the laboratory – simply send back the lateral flow device test itself.

The service is rapid, and you can get results in 48 hours in most cases. 
 

How PDplus™ works
PDplus™ is a simple two stage process:

1. You carry out a Phytophthora Pocket Diagnostic™ test to confirm a positive result for the target pathogen, then send the LFD to Forsite Diagnostics. (You don't need to send the plant sample)

2. We analyse DNA from the positive LFD to confirm the exact identity of the target pathogen.  Results are sent to you by email normally within 48 hours of Forsite receiving the LFD.
